Part of a creative team charged with bringing a clients idea
to life via a variety of print, electronic and film media, Advertising
Designers use computer software to develop the overall layout and
design of print ads for a variety of publications. Some also produce
promotional displays and marketing brochures, design distinctive company
logos, and develop signs and environmental graphics. An increasing
number of designers develop material for the Internet.
In 2004, the Advertising and Public Relations industries employed
425,000 workers; an additional 61,000 were self-employed. Most firms
are based in New York and California.
Employment is expected to grow 22% between 2004 and 2014—in
contrast with 14% of all industries combined—but competition
will be keen because the industrys perceived glamour attracts
more jobseekers than there are job openings.
