Facts |
Relative to their representation in the overall U.S. population, Blacks
spend more on fast-moving consumer goods and purchase and consume
them at a higher rate than their Anglo counterparts. Unfortunately,
despite this reality, very few Blacks are able to participate in creating
and building successful brands in the U.S. economy.
African-Americans are significantly underrepresented and/or virtually
absent from postsecondary education involving design devoted to creating
or building brands. Overall, such schools are not attracting enough
Black students for the key fields of design related to branding and
are graduating even fewer of them.
However, brands created and designed by Blacks continue to contribute
significantly to our national economy and are a source of jobs for
a growing number of Americans:
There are 823,500 Black-owned businesses in the U.S., which generate
$71.2 billion in revenue.1
Some popular/successful brands that were created and/or designed by
African-Americans include Jordan (Michael Jordan), Oprah, Tiger Woods,
BET and Sean John.
